Lloyd & Whyte

Independent Insurance Brokers Since 1946

About Lloyd & Whyte

Local brokers, backed by real muscle.

Lloyd & Whyte has been arranging insurance since 1946. In 2021 the business launched Lloyd & Whyte Community Broking, a network of independent local advisers across Somerset, Devon and South Wales, dedicated to small and local businesses, including pubs, bars and restaurants.

Their pitch is simple: the resources of a large broker with the ethos of a local one. Access to a panel of insurers to find the right cover and price, but a named adviser you can actually get on the phone, not a faceless call centre.

Lloyd & Whyte is part of Benefact Group, a charity-owned financial services group. Profits ultimately support good causes rather than shareholders, a model that sits naturally alongside what Save British Pubs is trying to do for the trade.

How It Works

Getting covered, without the hassle.

1

Have a conversation

Talk through your pub, bar or restaurant with a local adviser who understands hospitality risk, not a generic script.

2

They shop the panel

Your adviser compares cover and pricing across their panel of insurers to find a policy that actually fits your business.

3

Stay with the same person

Renewals, claims and changes go through the same adviser, not a different voice every time you call.

What’s In It For Your Pub

Cover built around how a pub actually runs.

Hospitality risk isn’t the same as office risk. Lloyd & Whyte’s Community Broking team builds policies around the way a pub, bar or restaurant actually operates.

All Your Cover, One Policy

Public liability, employers’ liability, product liability, contents, stock and business interruption, arranged together.

A Named Local Adviser

Direct access to the same adviser every time, someone who knows your business and your area.

Panel of Insurers

Cover compared across multiple insurers rather than a single default policy, to help find the right fit and price.

Profits Fund Good Causes

Part of charity-owned Benefact Group, so the money you spend on cover ultimately supports charitable giving too.

The Risk Landscape

Know the risks. Stay protected.

Running a pub carries specific legal and financial risks. Here’s what typically sits behind a hospitality insurance policy, please verify current detail before publishing.

UK: In Force

Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969

If you have staff, employers’ liability cover is a legal requirement, with fines for every day you trade without it.

UK: In Force

Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Sets your duty of care to staff and customers, the foundation most public liability claims sit on top of.

UK: In Force

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

Requires a fire risk assessment and a “responsible person” for the premises, relevant to property and business interruption cover.

UK: In Force

Food Safety Act 1990 & Food Hygiene Regulations

Sets food hygiene standards for anything served over the bar, directly relevant to product liability claims.

UK: In Force

Consumer Protection Act 1987

Covers liability for damage or harm caused by products supplied, including food and drink served to customers.

UK: In Force

Equality Act 2010

Access and treatment of customers and staff must be fair and non-discriminatory, and defensible if ever challenged.

Why This Matters

The wrong cover only shows up when it’s too late.

A single uninsured claim, a slip in the beer garden, a case of food poisoning, a kitchen fire, can threaten a pub that survived everything else. Getting cover right the first time matters more than getting it cheap.

For a Save British Pubs member, that means one conversation with someone who understands the trade, cover compared properly across the market, and a named adviser to call when it actually matters.
